Why farmers leave farming the farm? (why agriculture could be on the decline)
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
The common answers are:
1. Farming is hard;
2. You do not earn much in farming and pests and typhoons wipe out the little that you earned;
3. Young people want the good life: night life, office work, not dirty and back breaking at the farm
Many have not explained that since food is a necessity and prices are better, there could be millions in farming. Prices of rice, coffee, chocolate is better. And there are agriforestry that brings in millions: bamboo, cassava, sweet potatoes, flowers. No one is taking the lead, and explaining these to the farmers and young people
In a forum where PBBM was asked this question, (this post doesnt know whether he was still the DA sec,) he failed to explain fully well the arguments in favor of agriculture
I want agri to be the next trajectory of my life in the next 30 years. MVP and the rest are pursuing agri as the next big thing

Growing sweet potato vertically, saving precious land
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
Sweet potato, kamote can be grown vertically. Sweet potato, is nutritious and is vaunted to be anti cancer (any root crop for that matter). It is easy to grow, and can be grown at urban rooftop garden.
Triple farm output with fish farming: catfish and mudcrabs
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
The idea is to double and triple the output of the scarce land. Plant rice and introduce catfish or mudfish (hito or pantat) and mudcrabs in the plantation. This helps remove pests and establish ecosystem in your farm. The animal manure fertilizes the soil and the rice that you planted.
And your bank balance is also fertilized
There is no more excuse for being poor, except being demotivatted by AKA, 4ps and AICS.
We still wonder why some Filipinos/farmers are poor???!

4 hectares of crop on one hectare of land
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
About two decades ago, a Batangueno lawyer with whom this post transacted a 1/2 hectare property which became a high end subdivision to some of our kin and officers chided the Rizalenos for some of the idle lands he saw (including the one being transacted)
While Batanguenos prided themselves with 4 crops:
1. 1 hectare of coconut
2. 1 hectare of coffee
3. 1 hectare of pepper
4. 1 hectare of sitaw or talong
That makes the land 4x productive, and hence help stave of food scarcity.
We can practicxe this, even urban rooftop gardening

We have to step up cassava planting; there is demand for local and foreign buyers
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
Spacing of 1 meter, and drip irrigation, fertilization, regular weeding. Soil must be kept Moist kept 4-6 weeks,
Cassava can be harvested 10 months to 12 months, when there re few leaves at the top. Some agri practices can shorten this to 6 months. Yellow variety commands better prices and are heavier.
Ph should be kept at 4-7. Acidic soil should be mixed with lime. Overplanted fields must be planted to peanuts.
Harvesting can be done by harvester (costing $20,000) or just with a flow but can damage the tubers.

Carvy Maigue, a Filipino who invented solar cells from food waste
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
What a Filipino?
Filipino Olympic stars, tennis stars, boxer and now a Filipino inventor?
How wonderful?
Maigue is an electrical engineering studen at Mapua University which uses AUREUS (Aurora Renewable and UV Sequstration ) technology which conversts UV to visible light, for the conversion into DC by regular solar cells. This this augments the weaknesss of typical solar cell that rely on direct synlight for DC production.
There is now a solution for food waste - not just to feed the hungry millions but also those without electricity. A forthcoming Utopia where there is no hunger thrist, or lack of electricity
Can sweet potatoes be a sub for rice soon?
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
Many of our brethren are focussing attention on rice variety, rice technology etc. rice post harvest facility. Rather than investing efforts on substitute for rice.
This post saw that in US farmers are raising potatoes and sweet potatoes and invsest millions on farm equipmetn for this.
Rice requires a lot for its cultivation: dams, irrigation system, plowing and seedling preparation, frtilizer, and harvest facilities, drying faclities and rice mlling and packaging.
Why not raise sweet potatoes (kamote)? May be it may not mean money for poeple in govt or big time cartel businessmen. But sweet potato farming require little land and may be even feasible in urban gardens, and does not require much water and dams.
Why not go into this big time?
Import rather than raise food?
"Food for every ones table and every homes"
This post has seen very low readership of this page. And is disappointing, DA and the rest of the nation would rather spend energy and btain power on politics which gain them us absolutely nothing. We give AYUDA, country borrows massive amount from lending institutions and we may be hardly be able to pay in the future.
In the rice business, only several cartels control the rice trade. They are the ones who get rich. Why is this so?
Let us spernd energy and brain power to solve our problem on food security and be unlike African nations who experience famine and malnutirition. Let find solution to our rice productivity and rice dependence.
